.

.

.

null '76

DOCUMENTATION FOR DEVELOPING THE
IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE CONSUMPTIVE USE
IN THE GUNNISON RIVER BASIN

Irrigated agriculture consumptive use is one of the major sources of stream
depletion in the Gunnison River Basin, While there are two sources (for the
crop consumptive use estimates during the time period 1906-90, each used the
Soil Conservation Service (SCS), Modified Blaney-Criddle Method. Using this
method, consumptive use is expressed as a function of temperature, crop growth
stage coefficient, and monthly percent of daylight, This method is outlined
in the SCS Technical Release No. 21, Irrioation Water Reauirements.

Crop consumptive use estimates and irrigated acreage figures for the time
period, 1906-74, were taken from the Colorado River Simulation System (CRSS)
data base. The same data for the time period, 1975-85 was taken from the
Colorado River System, Consumptive Uses and Losses Reports: 1971-75, 1976-80,
and 1981-85. Estimates for 1986-90 were calculated using the best available
data and the methods as outlined in the Methods Manual and Plan of Studv for
the Colorado River Svstem, Consumptive Uses and Loses Report. 1985-90.

The irrigated acreage figures developed for the 1986-90 CU&L Report have not
been approved by all the Upper Colorado Basin States, In turn, concerns have
been raised about the validity of the irrigated acreage figures presented in
the 1981-85 CUL Report; the 1986-90 figures were developed using the same
methodology as in the 1981-85 report. The 1981-90 estimates should be used
with caution, as they are pending approval,

Colorado River Simulation System (CRSS) Data Base

Crop consumptive use estimates and irrigated acreage figures for the time
period, 1906-74, were from the CRSS data base. The purpose of the Upper
Colorado Consumptive Use Study for the CRSS data base was to determine the net
"man-caused" monthly consumptive use by irrigated areas and other related
developments during the time 1906-74. This was assumed to be equal to the
total consumptive use of irrigated crops minus the consumptive use which could
normally be expected under natural conditions.
