Limitrophe Division

While flowing past the northwestern
edge of Yuma, the Colorado River
passes the Northerly International
Boundary where the river meets the
~order between California and
Mexico,

The river then flows south for
another 20 m"i1es where it passes the
Southerly International Boundary"
located at San Luis, Arizona, and San
Luis, Sonora, Mexico, where the
river meets the border between
Arizona and Mexico, At the Souther-

Iy International Boundary, the river
enters exclusively into Mexico
where responsibility for the river
ends for the U,S"Bureau of Reclama-
tion and becomes the entire"respon-
sibility 01 the Mexican government.

The section of the Colorado River be-
tween the Northerly International
Boundary and the Southerly Interna-
tional boundary is called,the
Umltrophe Division C"limitrophe" .
meaning situated on a border),

In the Limitrophe Division the east
side of the river lies in the U.S, and
is the responsibility of the U,S,
g~lVernment, while the west side of
the river lies in Mexico and is the
responsibility of the Mexican govern-
ment.

The Limitrophe Division is a politi-
cally sensitive section of the river
since work done to one side of the
river could affect the other side of
the river, The United States and
Mexican governments are involved
in operating the river and have es-
tablished the International Bound-
ary and Water Commission to coor-
dinate intergovernmental alfairs
along the border and to coordinate
operation and maintenance ac-
tivities in the Umitrophe Division,
