THE AHITY MUTUAL IRRIGATION COMPANY

5 5 Superintendent'. Report
1 ~
TO

THE AMITY MUTUAL lRRlGAnON COMPANY

TO THE DIRECI'ORS AND S'I'OClCHOLDERS:
Gentlemen:
The following statements covering the operation and main-
tenance of The Am:iY Mutual Irrigation Company, its canals and
reservoir system, are subrnJtted for your consfderal1on.
It is difficult to report on such .a year as 1964. The headqlilll
diversion from the Arkansas River, at 16,151 acre feet, was the
lowest. In the history of the Company. In the YElar 1934, the worsl
yEW' of the drouth of the Thirties, the headgate diversion totaled
30,550 acre Jeel. Total rainfalHor 1964 al Holly amounted 10 11.33
inches, but nearly 7 inches of lhis fell during a violenl 2 day
storm the lasl of May. To aggravale the situation, severe wind
erosion in February and March partially filled several secl10ns of
canals with blow dirt, thus contributing to maintenance problems
and ezpense.
Dellvery of water was begun on April 7, when 300 cfs was
released from John Martin Reservoir for Amity use. This amount
"'as diverted until Apri112, when the Reservoir became empty.
No more water was available until May 25, when snow melt began
reaching Ihe Amity headgate. Diversions reached a peak of 540
cfs on May 28. On May 29-30, a severe storm dropped rainfaUin
amounls of from 6 10 8 inches over the entire system. The run"U
from. this storm caused 13 major breaks and 22 small breeks in the
Amity Canal banks. Damage was done in nearly every mile of the
canal. The cosl of the repair work was nearly $10,000.00 The
canal was repaired sufflc1ently 10 run a ltmlted amounl of waler by
June 6, bul with llttle demand for waler diversions were nol begun
unUlJune lB. Water. stored In John Martln Reservoir as Ii result of
the storm lasted unUllune 25. A call was made for river waler and
this water was held up unUI July 9. Diversions were begun again
on July 21, but lasted only 3 days. Water was again available on
Auqust 7, lasUng unUl Auqust 14. A one day diversion of 30 cfs on
Auqusl18 was the last water avaUable \0 \he Amity In 1964.

It was very evident this year thai maintenance of Ii dry canal is
more expensive than that of a wet one. In a normal year \he more
or less constanl flow of water prevents weed growlh. This year,
with short. water supply and long dry pertods between diversions,
the weeds and willows grew with prolific abandon. Since \he
canals musl be kept free of this growth in anUc1pallon of waler
diversions, the cost of this type of maintenance was nearly 3 times
norma],

PII,e 17
