.

.

-
'.

,-oj
~
\.J

Farm Survey

In September of 1982, a farm management survey was conducted in the

Yellow Jacket Project area by the Bureau of Reclamation. The survey was not

limited to the lands that would be served by the project because the number

of the surveys would be so limited that it would not give statistical relia-

bility to the data. Twenty-eight full-time farmers in the vicinity of Meeker

were interviewed. This number provided a good cross section of farm types,

crops, and enterprise mixes. Important data from the farm survey will be

discussed under appropriate report headings.

Prices Received and Paid

Prices used in this analysis were those approved by the Bureau of

Reclamation for use in calendar year 1982. The prices were normalized to

smooth out yearly fluctuations and to represent a long-term trend. The last

full year of data available, 1981 was the last year of price data used. Even

though, the farm budgets were developed to represent future conditions for

the repayment and benefit analyses, the prices paid and received were not

indexed to a future date. It was felt that even though these prices will

increase over timejthe relationship between them will remain rather constant.

Prices received

Prices received for crops sold were taken from the publication Colorado

Agricultural Statistics for the years 1979, 1980, and 1981. These prices

were normalized by averaging the three years. Prices received for livestock

sold were obtained from the Greele~,Market News Service in Greeley! Colorado

for the years 1977 through 1981. These prices were normalized by omitting

the highest and lowest price and averaging the remaining three prices. The

major prices received used in this analysis are shown in Table 1.

--)

3.
