.

.

A new project in the metropolitan area of Denver was initiated
in August. It involves studies of small watersheds in urban areas
in cooperation with the Inter-County Regional Planning Commission.
The overall program includes participation by the consulting firm
of Wright-McLaughlin Engineers, who are responsible for producing
a manual on urban drainage design. The first year's effort by the
Geological Survey will be largely one of establishing a network of
streamflow stations on small urban watersheds.

Another new project was initiated with the Air Force Academy.
The purpose will be to replace a well abandoned because of reduced
yield. The Survey will select the site and supervise the drilling.
The Pueblo Ordnance Depot has asked for a more extensive appraisal
of the water supply. The project will involve test drilling to
determine where water is most readily available. A similar project
is nearing completion in the vicinity of Rocky Mountain National
Park Headquarters. The Headquarters is in need of an increased
water supply particularly during the summer months.

Of particular significance is the development of a new technique
for estimating the effects of well withdrawals on the depletion of
streamflow. The method was developed by one of our senior engineers,
Mr. Clifford T. Jenkins. It will permit the ready computation of
the effects of any well or group of wells on the depletion of the
rate of flow or volume of flow in streams such as the Arkansas
River valley. Our next step is to prepare a map for the Arkansas
Valley which will facilitate the application of this method in that
area. Mr. Jenkins' new technique is the subject of a journal article
for the National Water Well Association and will be available to
the general public within a few months.

.
1179

2
