.

f

J,:
, ~L.

..'-')
..

REPORT OF THE WATER RESOURCES DIVISION

U.S. Geological Survey

August 18, 1967

Runoff from snowmelt for 1967 was near normal in the North
Platte, Upper Colorado, and Yampa River Basins. It was much below
normal in the remainder of the mountain area. Above normal rainfall
this summer has appreciably improved the runoff forecast in some
areas. If conditions remain normal during August and September, the
runoff for the 1967 water year will be about 85 percent of normal
for most of the mountain area, near normal in the North Platte River
Basin, but only about two-thirds of normal in the Rio Grande, San
Juan, and Upper South Platte River Basins. Ground water use during
the early part of the irrigation season was much below normal owing
to the abundance of precipitation. Adequate ground-water storage
will be available to accommodate any irrigation needs for the
remainder of the 1967 irrigation season.

Four Survey reports have been released since the last Board
Meeting. The report on streamflow records for 1966 has been
published and sent on August 10, 1967 to the various cooperating
agencies and other users of our data. A report on the Air Force
Academy was published as Professional Paper 551. The book is
entitled, "General and Engineering Geology of the United States Air
Force Academy Site, Colorado," by D. J. Varnes and G. R. Scott, with
a section on Ground Water, by W. D. E. Cardwell and E. D. Jenkins.

A third report, Water-Supply Paper 1843 is entitled, "Geology
and Ground-Water Resources of the Big Sandy Creek Valley, Lincoln,
Cheyenne, and Kiowa Counties, Colorado," by D. L. Coffin, and the
fourth report, Water-Supply Paper l576-G entitled, "Geology and
Availability of Ground Water on the Ute Mountain Indian Reservation,
Colorado and New Mexico," by J. H. Irwin was prepared in cooperation
with the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe of Indians. The reservation is in
the southwest corner of Colorado and a part of northwestern New
Mexico.

Project activities in the South Platte, Arkansas, an~Rio
Grande Basins for the summer has consisted largely of data/collection
and includes the measurement of wells, seepage runs on streams,
conducting pumping tests, inventory of wells, and the collection
of chemical quality samples of ground water.

A program is being developed for automatically processing
water-level and pumpage data.

1130

1

-
