In recent years, biologists have captured twice as
many Colorado squawfish in the 15-mile reach as anywhere else in the main stem Colorado
River. Also, 10 or more years ago, razorback suckers were found in spawning condition in
this stretch of river. Major agricultural water diversions have decreased in-stream flows
significantly during late summer and early fall. In-stream flow recommendations were made
for the l5-mile reach were fmaiized in May 1995. Summer flow recommendations ranged
from 810 cubic feet per second during drought conditions to 1,630 cfs during years with
above average precipitation.
*
The Colorado Water Conservation Board filed notice with the water court Dee,).3", 1995, on
Colorado River to appropriate new water rights for in-stream flows for endang~red fish. The
in-stream flow appropriation would consist of a "base-flow water right" to protect the fish
during low-flow conditions and a "recovery-flow water right" that allows for future water
development. The Colorado Water Conservation Board had also filed for 581 cfs of water
for the IS-mile reach. It is anticipated that all in-stream flow f1Iings for the IS-mile reach
will be litigated.

Action:

Water court to consider approval of 581 cfs water right for endangered
fish.
June 1996, depending on extent of litigation.

Date:

Action:

Water court to consider approval of base-flow right and recovery-flow
right for IS-mile reach,
December 1998, depending on extent of litigation.

Date:

Questions?

Please call Henry Maddux at (970) 245-3920, ext. 29,

5
