Propagation facilities for endangered fish

The Recovery Program currently has endangered fish "refuge" ponds at the Ouray
Endangered Fish Facility and Wahweap State Fish Hatchery in Utah and the Grand Valley
Endangered Fish Facility and Horsethief Canyon State Wildlife Area in Colorado. The
Recovery Program has approved construction of refuge ponds in Craig, Colo. Additional
ponds will be constructed at Craig, Grand Valley, Ouray and Wahweap during fiscal year
1996. By the end of FY 1996, the combined surface area of these four sites will be 18.3
acres. An additional five acres are needed for primary refuge ponds and another 9.5 acres for
backup ponds,

Primary refuges for endangered fish propagation include Grand Valley for fish from the
Colorado River and Ouray for fish from the Green Rivers. Refuge ponds in Craig will serve
as a backup refuge to Ouray; ponds at Wahweap will serve as a backup refuge to the Grand
Valley. The Wahweap ponds will also serve as grow-out ponds to produce endangered fish
for experimental augmentation and restoration stocking in the upper Colorado River Basin,

Together, these ponds will allow the Recovery Program to produce fish for adult brood
stocks, research, stocking and refuge populations that will prevent extinction in the wild. The
present effort is to produce brood stocks cons isting of 25 family lots, which will be offspring
from razorback suckers from the middle Green River and upper Colorado rivers, (Long-term
fish needs for augmentation and restoration stocking have not yet been identified.)

Action:

Two two-tenths-acre ponds and two half-acre ponds to be constructed at the
Ouray Endangered Fish Facility in Utah.
Oct. I, 1996,

Date:

Action:

Four one-acre ponds and a water conditioning reservoir to be constructed
in Craig, Colo.
Oct. 1, 1996,

Date:

Action:

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to construct up to 10 additional
half-acre refuge ponds at the Wahweap site,
Oct, 1, 1996.

Date:

Action:

A five-acre off-channel pond near the confluence of the Gunnison and
Colorado rivers to be modified to serve as a grow-out pond for razorback
suckers. The fish will be used for future stocking these two rivers.
July 30, 1996.

Date:

Questions?

Please call Dick Wydoski at (303) 236-2985, ex!. 228,

10
