<br />t'- <br /> <br />, <br />~'"I <br />",.~ <br />(.,} <br />c:~ <br /> <br />, <br /> <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />i <br />I <br />/ <br /> <br />MONTHLY PROGRESS REPORT~ <br />AQUATRAIN PROJECT <br />July 1983 <br /> <br />1.0 INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />This report summarizes Saline Water Transport and Use Office planning <br />and related activities on the AQUATRAIN Project for the previous <br />month and anticipated activities for the next 2 months. The <br />purpose of the report is to inform individuals involved with AQUATRAIN <br />of current and upcomin9 activities so that a coordinated effort <br />can be maintained and project flag dates met. <br /> <br />2.0 SUBTEAM: WATER RIGHTS/WATER SUPPLY/STATE ISSUES (Sturges-Murray) <br />2.1 JULY EVENTS <br /> <br />The July 19 hearing on the salinity control bill (S.752) <br />was postponed and has been rescheduled for September 15. <br /> <br />~ Subteam leader, McKeever, Clinton, and Stefanec briefed <br />State of Colorado program directors on the project on July 1~. <br /> <br />Discussions were held with members of the Colorado River <br />Basin Salinity Control Forum regarding their role and representa- <br />tion in the project. Printed materials will be revised <br />I to indicate that AQUATRAIN is a "cooperative effort between <br />governments and private industry", thus includi!l.Q !:..ounty '" <br />and local ~overnments as well. <br /> <br />On July 26-27, Reclamation Commissioner Broadbent, UC Regional <br />Director Barrett, Special Assistant to the Commissioner <br />Thompson, Johnson of LC Planning Division, Clinton and McKeever <br />met with Nevada State and local representatives. The Commissioner <br />significantly furthered the project and publicly stated <br />Interior's interest in AQUATRAIN for developing western <br />coal, as well as reducing Colorado River salinity. Governor <br />Bryan expressed interest and asked many relevant questions <br />during the 1-1/2 hour meeting. Meetings in Ely with County <br />Commissioners and White Pine Power Authority were also productive. <br />In Clark County and the City of Henderson, briefings were <br />held to address the constricted corridor aspects in the <br />Las Vegas area. <br /> <br />2.2 ANTICIPATED AUGUST EVENTS <br /> <br />Clinton, McKeever, Sturges-Murray, and Stefanec will meet <br />with representatives of State and local governments on August 22 <br />in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Anticipated attendees are: a <br />representative of the Governor's staff, State Engineer's <br />Office, State Senators and Representatives, and the Mayors <br />of Rock Springs, Green River, Superior, and Granger and <br />their City Councils. <br />
