t'- , ~'"I ",.~ (.,} c:~ , . . i I / MONTHLY PROGRESS REPORT~ AQUATRAIN PROJECT July 1983 1.0 INTRODUCTION This report summarizes Saline Water Transport and Use Office planning and related activities on the AQUATRAIN Project for the previous month and anticipated activities for the next 2 months. The purpose of the report is to inform individuals involved with AQUATRAIN of current and upcomin9 activities so that a coordinated effort can be maintained and project flag dates met. 2.0 SUBTEAM: WATER RIGHTS/WATER SUPPLY/STATE ISSUES (Sturges-Murray) 2.1 JULY EVENTS The July 19 hearing on the salinity control bill (S.752) was postponed and has been rescheduled for September 15. ~ Subteam leader, McKeever, Clinton, and Stefanec briefed State of Colorado program directors on the project on July 1~. Discussions were held with members of the Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Forum regarding their role and representa- tion in the project. Printed materials will be revised I to indicate that AQUATRAIN is a "cooperative effort between governments and private industry", thus includi!l.Q !:..ounty '" and local ~overnments as well. On July 26-27, Reclamation Commissioner Broadbent, UC Regional Director Barrett, Special Assistant to the Commissioner Thompson, Johnson of LC Planning Division, Clinton and McKeever met with Nevada State and local representatives. The Commissioner significantly furthered the project and publicly stated Interior's interest in AQUATRAIN for developing western coal, as well as reducing Colorado River salinity. Governor Bryan expressed interest and asked many relevant questions during the 1-1/2 hour meeting. Meetings in Ely with County Commissioners and White Pine Power Authority were also productive. In Clark County and the City of Henderson, briefings were held to address the constricted corridor aspects in the Las Vegas area. 2.2 ANTICIPATED AUGUST EVENTS Clinton, McKeever, Sturges-Murray, and Stefanec will meet with representatives of State and local governments on August 22 in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Anticipated attendees are: a representative of the Governor's staff, State Engineer's Office, State Senators and Representatives, and the Mayors of Rock Springs, Green River, Superior, and Granger and their City Councils.
