<br />is greated, and rises during the night when transpiration is least, the rise or
<br />decline beginning about the same hour each day. Similarly, the fluctuations are
<br />small at the beginning of the growing season in March when the draft is small,
<br />increase as the growing season advances as is shown for June, and decline
<br />as the growing season comes to a close in October. Generally, too, the water
<br />table declines through the spring and summer months as the draft becomes
<br />progressively greater and rises toward the end of the growing season as the
<br />draft becomes less and less.

<br />The transpiration draft by phreatophytes, shown by the diurnal fluctuation
<br />of the water level in wells, is reflected also in a reduction in streamflow. An
<br />example is provided by the record of flow of the Gila River near Geronimo
<br />in the Safford Valley, Ariz" shown in Figure 5. The period of record, June
<br />6.13, 1944, is the same as for that of the water,level fluctuation in well T.p,
<br />shown in figure 4. The gaging station at Geronimo, where the record was
<br />obtained, is about 20 miles downstream from well T.6. The flood plain in this
<br />reach of the stream, as well as above and below, is covered with a dense growth
<br />
