SECCION IV - GEOHIDROLOGIA

87

(MacKichan, 1951, p, 4), On this hasis, 14 young cottonwoods or 11 young
sa\tcedar plants during the growing season in the Safford Valley used as much
water as one city dweller, nearly twice as much as One rural dweller haying
running water, and 15 times as much a sone not having running water. In
terms .of livestock needs, 1 young cottonwood tree or saltcedar plant consumes
a little more _ water than does a cow, a horse, or mule, nearly as much as a:
milk cow, and about as much as 3 hogs, 4 sheep, or 4 goats.

EFFECT ON THE WATER TABLE OF, TRANSPIRATION BY
PHREATOPHYTES

The effect on the water table of transpiration by phreatophytesis quite
marked. It may he compared to that in a well field having many pumps operat-
ing simultaneously hut at a rate that varies continuously throughout the day
and growing season. In an area of phreatophyte growth, the daily variation
in transpiration rate produces a diurnal fluctuation of the water table. The
