<br />1 - 30 <br /> <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />National Trail System Studies <br /> <br />The National Trail System encourages the establishment of trails to <br />foster public enjoyment and appreciation of the "open-air. outdoor areas <br />of the Nation" in the same manner the wild and scenic rivers system encour- <br />ages the protection of free-flowing rivers. <br /> <br />HCRS. in carrying out the responsibilities of the National Trails <br />System Act (P.L. 90-543). identifies those trails which should be studied <br />as potential national scenic and/or historic components of the National <br />Trails System. encourage the development of National Recreation Trails and <br />review potential candidates for Secretarial consideration, encourage and <br />assist in the identification and development of connecting and side trails. <br />HCRS will also recommend to the Secretary relative priorities. in accordance <br />with national significance. for Congressionally authorized studies included <br />in the Act by action not initiated by the Administration; and assist States <br />and local governments in efforts to plan and establish trails as authorized <br />in Sec. 8(a) of the Act. <br /> <br />National Heritage Program <br /> <br />Natural Heritage Resource Program including National natural landmarks <br />and elements of historic landmarks not in the Office of Archeology and <br />Historic Preservation (OAHP). <br /> <br />Program Administration <br /> <br />HCRS is responsible for the National Natural and Historic Landmarks <br />program as part of its nationwide heritage resources and recreation planning <br />function. The focus of functions of this program is the identification and <br />study of this country's natural heritage. the maintenance of a register of <br />natural landmarks. and the coordination and assistance actions required to <br />conduct a nationwide cooperative Federal. State. and local government, and <br />private interests program to ensure the preservation and protection of the <br />best of our nation's natural science landmarks. The Program specifically <br />includes the function and responsibilities necessary to carry out studies <br />of American and natural history themes. which are critical components of a <br />balanced national heritage resources and recreation system. and research into <br />the significance of historical and natural areas. as well as evaluating cri- <br />teria used to determine "significance." <br /> <br />Cultural Heritage Resource Program <br /> <br />Office of Archeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP) <br /> <br />The Office of Archeology and Historic Preservation administers archeo- <br />logical and historic preservation programs mandated by statute and Executive <br />regulations. These programs include the National Register of Historic Places. <br />Grants Administration. National Historic Sites Survey. Historic American <br />Buildings Survey. Historic American Engineering Record, Interagency Archeo- <br />logical Services. and Technical Preservation Services. Located within the <br />Chief's office is the Automatic Data Processing Section. <br />
