Mineral analytical and test
services are made available to State agencies together with reference services
to the public.

Environmental Involvement

Mineral expertise is provided on environmentally related mineral and energy
matters by the preparation and review of environmental impact statements and
assessments through participation in studies by interagency commissions and
local-State-Federal land-use planning groups and through assistance to and
cooperation with other agencies, industry, and the public. Currently, Bureau
personnel are assisting the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Geological
Survey in drafting EIS's on seven Federal coal regions participating in a level B
study of the Yellowstone Basin and adjacent coal lands and contributing to the
National Water Assessment.

Minerals Availabilit~

An expanding program tailored to determine the quantity, quality, costs, and
constraints of strategic and critical minerals available to the United States
mandates these operations: (1) collect, compile, and evaluate specific data on
individual mineral deposits domestic and foreign; (2) develop and keep current
a computerized data bank for storage and retrieval of minerals information to
provide the facts required to assess the minerals position of the Nation in any
commodity; and (3) provide the comprehensive minerals availability information
essential for economic and defense purposes.

Fuels Availabil~

The fuels program is divided into two areas of work: (1) data gathering
and maintenance of computerized data banks on petroleum, natural gas, and coal and
(2) advancing of coal mining technology. Objectives of the first area are to
acquire and input data on oil and gas field characteristics, analyses, and production;
to maintain information on oil imports and the products handled by refineries, bulk
terminals, gas processing plants, and pipeline; and to keep updated the "demonstrated
reserve base" for coals in the Western United States. Goals of the second area are
to further coal mining technology by specific economic and technologic studies.
(Function transferred to the new Department of Energy effective October 1, 1977.)

1 - 25
