.

;}t.~

'@i~~)

",.' . . . .
.t
,;

O r;~' 0 (-. .1
U.G I... 0..; ,

navigation. l)ecause of the vel'~' 211[;,t cost of such a sy;:;'~e;li i'.; obvlously

wou1.d not be prudent use of public funds to make such; an instaJ.J.ation before

it is actually needed. A special study of such a future development recently

has been authorized by Congress.

The power generation capacity which is presently instaJ.J.ed in the main

stem system is 985,000 kilO1ffittS. By the time the last pmrer units at Oalte

and Big Bend come on the line in 1966, the total power instaJ.J.ation ,/ill reach

2,0!~8,OOO kilo,Tatts. This represents a substantial increase over the originaJ.

proposal by the Corps of Engineers in House Document 475 for 1,100,000 kilo-

watts, and over the ol"iginaJ. proposal by the Bureau of Reclamation in Senate

Document 191 for less than 500,000 kilowatts. Thus the Federal hydro installa-

tion on the Missouri River will serve to ca:rry fa:r greater preference power

loads than were originally visualized.

In summery, this mid-year review shows that as construction progress con-

tinues on the comprehensive Basin program, COmpleted projects are being im-

mediately placed in public service so that the people now living in the Basin,

as well as future generations, can enjoy the fruits of these developments.

Actual e:x;perience in the Missouri River Basin is a sound testimonial to

the value of development of comprehensive multiple-puxpose programs for this

and other river basin areas. The Flood Control Act of 1944 prOvided a sound

basic framel0f0rk with flexibility to add neH developments as public needs arise.

The Federal and State agencies have demonstrated their capability to provide

the cooperation and coordination essential to sound planning and construction

and, equaJ.ly important, the controls needed to insure the best and most equit-

able use of these controlled natural resources in the public interest of the

entire Basin.

7

: :';;'~/.'"
>.~<~~:
.... --~
'~"'...: -'-.~'
i?5~~

I

>}-~-<
:;.: ",
C/.~:Z~

;~~,~;1
~i,.:~

~,Y~~:::r-
'-.-.."'.

fl~i1~

....~~..; :::~:;".

~~~~
~g~
~::\:~~*;
."-' "'-'"-.
1...:.;--:::-:
;~tf::~:'
: ,~'';:'--~'~
;,--~.-,::",. .
- ", :":-::. ~
',';.
