- 4 -

content. This primary source is used whenever water is available. Otherwise
the Dolores River is used, but only as a last resort. The owner of the ranch
indicated that his cattle have at times drunk from the river.

At Gateway, another ranch irrigates approximately 200 acres of pasture
crops with river water. A few acres of grain and a small orchard are also
irrigated. The river is used during high spring flows when salt concentrations
are low; then the owner turns to a supplemental source during the summertime.
There is a community "swimming hole" some 5 miles above Qateway which was in use
almost daily during the survey. The cha~nel here is 40-45 feet wide and deep
enough for diving from a homemade board some 10 feet above the surface. There
is a picnic area here also.

Gateway has individual water supplies and a community septic tank. A
typical sewage odor was noted at the Gateway sampling station several times
during this survey.

CONDUCT OF THE SURVEY

The survey was conducted in the area of Uravan, ,Slick Rock, and Gateway,
Colorado during the period August 17-28, 1960. Water samples were filtered
daily and composited by cycles in the laboratory at the Grand Junction Water
Treatment Plant. Bioassays were performed at the Colorado State Fish Hatchery,
Durango, Colorado.

Sampling Stations

Twp sets of sampling stations were used, one for water samples, the
other for bottom fauna. Sampling stations are shown in Figure I; stream and
effluent sampling stations are designated with the code "US", bottom organism
stations are designated with the code "B". A detailed description of the
stations follows below and gives locations of corresponding stations.

TABLE II
DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLING STATIONS

Station:'

Location and Description

US-l

Dolores River, 4.5 river miles upstream ,from
Slick Rock plant, and approximately 0.2 mile up
from Colorado Highway 80 bridge.
