-

,

.

.

THE NEED

Fort Collins needs neither the water or the power that would
be produced by the project. I'ot't Collins has approximately
38,000 acre feet of water it'l.:\ilable. At current population
levels, Fort Collins uses 1~,00v acre feet. Thus population
can double with current supplies. Population can more than
triple if Fort Collins develops sources pending or available
in the near future.

Similiarly, when Rawhide Power Plant is completed it will
provide up to 750 megawatts of electricity. The cities of
Fort Collins, Loveland, Longrnont, and Estes Park use about
150 megawatts per year. Thus the population could quadruple
without a need for additional electricity.

Most importantly, alternatives to large dams exist. Improving
and cleaning existing plains reservoirs which are in need of
repair and are silting up would have a dramatic affect. Just
by improving one reservoir, such as North Poudre #6 an
additional 5000 acre feet of water could be attainable.
Conservation through water meters, leak detection projects,
irrigation reform and education would also be effective. It
is estimated that totul Fort Collins water consumption would
be reduced by 14% just by installing water meters.

THE CURRENT STORY

There are several key players in the poudre issue. Only
Congress can designate the poudre Wild and Scenic. Before
Congress can act the State of Colorado and the Forest Service
will jointly make a recornmend~tion for protection or devel-
opment to Congress. This recmmr.endation is made through a
Final Environmental Impact Statement. (FEIS)

However, the release of the FBIS has been delayed because
the atate of Colorado has not yet decided whether they support
protection of the entire Cache La Poudre River. Governor
Richard Lamm will be making this decision very soon. Lamm's
decision is particularly important since the Congressman for
the area, Hank Brown, has declared his intention to introduce
legislation to protect the Poudre when the FElS is released.

Governor Lamm must know that support for the preseryation of
the Poudre is strong and statewide. Please write. your letter
to Governor Lamm today. Urge him to support preservation of
the entire segment of the Cache La Poudre River studied for
Wild and Scenic designation.

Write: Governor Richard Lamm, State Capitol Building, Denver CO 80203

COLORADO OPEN SPACE COUNCIL'
2239 East Colfax
Denver, CO 80206
399-9453

\)'Ou':'

Nonprofi t
Organization
U.S. Postage
PAID
Permi t No. 1005
Denver, CO.

~. $. ?ore~t Service, USDA
P. c. :::0:-: 25127
:~"',:~,:",:,'("o':~.
