o

c.

irrigation requirements and by scheduling supplemental releases of
water from Parker Dam for sluicing flows and for refill of
Laguna Reservoir. This practice has fulfilled minimum sluicing
requirements without the waste of large amounts of aluice water which
otherwise would have been delivered in excess of Mexico's daily water
order.

-

~
C"";

'. .

The program to maintain Laguna Reservoir full or near full on weekends
and holidays to provide for recreation was continued during 1981.

12. Radio Communications

Reclamation's responsibility in scheduling deliveries of irrigation
water at and below Imperial Dam and deliveries under the Mexican Water
Treaty requires that dependable communications be maintained between
Imperial Dam, Boulder City, Phoenix, and the four radio reporting
river gages. Failures have occurred in the radio system during the
year; however, maintenance provided by the Department of Energy and
Yuma Project Office radio technicians returned the units to service
within a reasonable length of time.

13. Gaging Stations, Colorado River at Taylor Ferry and below
Cibola Valley

These gages are operated by Reclamation. They are interrogated by
radio every 2 hours from Imperial Dam control house. The data
received from these stations, coordinated with releases from
Parker Dam and diversions and return flows from Palo Verde Irrigation
District and Colorado River Indian Reservation, are used in scheduling
and forecasting water operations at Imperial Dam.

14. Gaging Station, Colorado River below Yuma, Arizona

This station is located below the point where the California
Wasteway and Reservation Main Drain return to the Colorado River
and is operated by the USGS. Radio paging equipment operated by
Reclamation is used to obtain hourly flows which are
recorded at Imperial Dam. The data received from this station are a
valuable aid in regulating the flow of Mexican treaty water to the
Northern International Boundary.

Problems with this gaging station have occurred this year. A sandbar
has built up near the gage, plugging the transmission lines to the
stilling well. This has required frequent "blowing out" of these
transmission lines by maintenance forces. The gage is scheduled to be
moved downstream to a better location in 1982. Radio equipment at
this station has functioned properly.

16
