~
~~:~J
Tf:>,.

A~
\~1~';")

l'-
c.-
~
r:

C~

the basin was approximately 0.1 feet with a volume of approximately
1,145 cubic yards, consisting mainly of fine materials. This is
considered a minor quantity and continues to give the indication that
most of the sediment that would normally enter the basin is being
deposited in the dredged area of the reservoir above the Gila Canal
Headgates. While the basin was dry, O&M personnel inspected the basin
floor, the floor drains, and the headgates. A crack in the embankment
along the west side of the desilting basin was noted during the outage
and this warrants careful observation in the future.

7. Gila Diversion Works

The Gila Diversion Works contain eight diversion gates which are used
to regulate flows to the Gila Gravity Main Canal and eight sluice
gates which are used to drain the Gila desilting basin and sluice
sediment deposits from the Gila desilting basin,

A continual problem with sheared pins, stripped hoisting nuts, and
broken stems on the diversion gates resulted in controlling flows to
the Gila Gravity Main Canal with the Gila Headgates. Some of the
repairs were delayed until the annual outage on the Gila Gravity Main
Canal.

The No. 6 diversion gate was rebuilt, sandblasted, and repainted. The
No.7 sluice gate was rebuilt, sandblasted, and repainted and gate
seals were replaced.

Installation of computer hardware to operate the diversion gates and
to indicate gate openings was completed in 1981. Computer software
problems have been found, and remedial action is underway.

8. Gila Sluiceway

The Gila Sluiceway Channel which was rea lined and improved in 1975
continued to function satisfactorily during 1981. In order to prevent
water and sediment from backing into the Gila Sluiceway Channel during
sluicing operations in the California Sluiceway, a dike is constructed
at the lower end of the Gila Sluiceway to block the flow of water.
This dike has to be removed annually to allow for flushing operations
in the Gila Sluiceway. The dike was removed during the middle of
November and was replaced in December after the sluicing operations.

9. Hydrography

The USGS measures the flows at Station 60 and Station 1117 on the
All-American Canal once every week. Measurements of the flow at
Station 30, Gila Gravity Main Canal, are made twice a month by the
USGS hydrographers and more frequently when deemed necessary. Records
of the flow computed from water stage records and flow measurements

13
