THE NORTH PLATTE RIVER AND TRIBUTARIES

From this fragmentary reoord as a basis the total flow into

Nebraska was extended for the period 1895 through 1939. The relation be-
tween the total flow to Nebraska and the disoharge at Whalen was plotted

on an annual basi s. The relation curve as plotted was very good and shoW""

ed that there is a difference in relation between present oonditions and

the conditions existing before the Fort Laramie system with an area of

46.000 aores in Wyoming came into the picture. From these r elati on

ourves annual estimates for the 45""Year period were made. As a check

against these amlUal estimates the relation.b3tween the flow a t ~Ihalen and

the total flow into Nebraska was worked up by months and from these month-

ly relation ourves estimates for the individual months throue;hout the

period were made. The sums of those monthly estimates were oOlIlIB- red

with the annual estimates. The peroentages that each month of record at

Whalen bears to the annual flow at Whalen were calculated. These peroen-

tages were then applied to the annual value determined for the tota.l flow

into Nebraska. This gave a new set of monthly values which were compared

with the origina.l values as determined from the direot relation curves.

This oheck waS made merely to discover any abnormal variations that might

have oocurred in any of the estimates. Sinoe the annual values as deter-

mined. both by the sum of the monthly estimates and the direot relation

+ +
did not vary aver - 10% and for the most part less than - 5%, these values
were aocepted from the relation ourve wherever the variation was':!:. 5% or
less were averaged where the variation was .:t 5% to = 101.. Due to the un-

reliability of individual monthly estimates the reoord has been worked up

only on an annual basis for the years 1895 through 1911 and 1920 through 1928.

-2-

Y: 1?~

- -
