.,

Ml:n"l
- - >082-40-91566
COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD'.ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT.

.

WATER ENTERING NEBRASKA FROM THE NORTH PLATTE RIVER AND TRIBUTARIES
September 1940

Although there has been a station maintained during reoent years

at the \~oming-Nebraska state line. tIns station does not measure the total

water entering the State of' Nebraska having its souroe in the North Platte

River and its tributaries. There is oonsi. derable water diverted by the

Interstate and Fort l.e.ramie Canal Systems which in part is used in the

State of' Wyoming and in part by Nebraska. Nebraska receives the largest

share of' this oanal water and in order to make an aoourate estimate of' the

total amount entering Nebraska it is necessary either to estimate the

.

amount used in "yoming or to obtain some reoord of the amounts entering

Nebraska through the oanal systems. The United States Reoltu1lB.tion Bureau

has maintained a reoord of the amounts of water passing from l~oming into

Nebraska through these two canal systems. From 1912 through 1919 the

station was maintained at Henry. Nebraska. whioh is a short distanoe below

the stllteline. By use of that reoord and the extension of it. together

wi th the records of the Interstate Canal as furnished by the Reolamation

Bureau. and from r eoords of the Mitohe11 and Gering oanals. and from

estimates for those oanals. amounts were oaloulllted whioh are believed to

be the total flow into the State of' Nebraska. The oontributions made by

Horse Creek should be considered and al1owanoe has been made for the dis-

charge of' Horse Creek in these oaloulations. Then f'rom 1929 to date a

gaging station has been maintained at the Wyoming-Nebraska line. Thi s new

gaging station is above the Gering Canal and below the llitohell Canal.

.'

In oalculllting the total f'low in Nebraska for this later period the

diversions made by the Gering Canal are left out and the Ft. l.e.ramie

Diversions added with all other items remaining as f'or the earlier period.

-1-
