.

.

1. Thr~ composites/month, not all with complete chemistry;
~. At,lieast 1 composite/month, all with complete chemistry; and

,
N 3. Ins1lantaneous.
~
W From the hi!storical record, a data base will be developed which will include
c..n average monthly values of solute concentration (mg/L) and streamflow (m3/s)
for all months with sufficient chemistry data. At least one complete chemical
analysis du'ring the calendar month is considered sufficient. Only samples
with analys~s for all major ions will be considered. Sodium and potassi~
concentratipns, when reported separately, will be combined.' Missing values
for potassi:um will be assumed negligible and ~ill not be cause for exclusion
of that sample. If bicarbonate concentrations are not reported, they will be
calculated ~rom alkalinity 1/, based on the assumption that alkalinity is
totally a result of bicarbonate.

Five method~ will be used to develop the data base. Method selection will be
based on th~ nature of the historical record: '

Method 1. - Category 1 chemical data with daily. specific conductance:

- Compute total dissolved solids concentration (TDSa) for each
analYsis (a).

TDSa

6
= ~ C.
..1=/ .la

+2 ...2
w1i.?re ~ja ar~ con~entrati<?~s of the six solutes (i): Ca, Mg,
Na i+- K"; HC03, Cl, and S04'

- Compute solute mass fractions (Pi).

Cia
Pi = TDSa

,- Compute daily concentrations (Cik) for all solutes (i) and days (k)
,.,in ~nsampl eel period.

!

TOSa
Cik = Pi s;-- Sk
a

wh~re Sa = specific conductance of composite sample, and
, Sk = measured specific conductance on day k of the unsampled
period.

11 HC03 (mgf:L) = 1.219 * Alk.
