The Narrows Unit was authorized for construction by

the Congress and President in 1970. Repayment contracts have been signed

with the Central Colorado and Lower South Platte Water Conservation

Districts in 1976.

The ground-water recharge system would be a single-purpose irriga-

tion project. The Narrows Unit as authorized would result in irrigation

supplies, flood control, fish and wildlife conservation and development,

public outdoor recreation, and potential future municipal and industrial

supplies.

CONCEPT OF ARTIFICIAL RECHARGE

Defini tion

Artificial recharge can be simply defined as any artificial means

that increases the amount of water entering a ground-water reservoir. For

the purposes of this study, artificial recharge shall be defined as any

means of introducing surface water into the ground-water system so as to

augment the naturally available quantities of ground water.

Methods of Recharge

There are two different types of artificial recharge systems: direct

and indirec t.

Direct methods include systems which recharge collected or diverted

waters into the ground-water reservoir. Examples of these techniques
