000980

of these Units. Forest Service policy precludes recommendation for
Wilderness classification of areas of known mineralization.

Major elements of this Alternative are:
1. Delineates the largest Unit of Wilderness judged suitable.

2. Includes within its boundary, known highly mineralized areas,
not regarded as available.

3. High cost of administration is inherent because of ill-defined
boundaries and configuration of the Units.

4. Easy accessibility to the Units will continue to create
severe adverse impacts on the wilderness resource, that
are difficult to prevent.

5. Declassification of 43,680 acres of the present Primitive
Areas judged not suitable.

Alternative #4 provides for five Wilderness Units of 80,150 acres,
consisting of 4,277 acres within the Uncompahgre Primitive Area, 11,022
acres within the Wilson Mountains Primitive Area, and 64,851 acres of
contiguous suitable and available lands. (See Map No.1)

Major elements of this Alternative are:

1. Known mineralized areas are excluded from the proposed
Wilderness Units because of, (a) the National need for
mineral resources, (b) existing mineral rights which
cannot be extinguished in a reasonable and practical
manner -- cost to the public, (c) subsequent mineral
development within these areas would adversely effect
their wilderness quality and suitability.

2. Definable boundaries on topographic features to assure
that the wilderness resource endures at least cost.

3. Exclusion of the sight and sound of nearby mineral and
other development activity deemed incompatible with
the wilderness experience.

4. Declassification of 84,869 acres of the present Primitive
Areas judged not suitable and/or available. (43,680
acres not suitable and 41,189 acres as not available.)

These four management alternatives deal generally with the future
management of the National Forest lands in the Uncompah9re and Wilson
Mountains Primitive Areas and more specifically with the question of
land allocation decisions, on these lands, to be made pursuant to

-9-
