<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />In the case of the Narrows Project, however, the failure of the project <br /> <br /> <br />to materialize up to this time has been solely the result of short- <br /> <br /> <br />comings of our state and local governments. <br /> <br />In 1958 a group of residents from the South Platte River <br /> <br />valley, representing areas extending general1y'from just below Denver <br /> <br />to the state line, appeared before the Colorado Water conservation <br /> <br />Board and requested the Board to reinitiate studies leading towards <br /> <br />the construction of channel storage on the South Platte River. The <br /> <br />Board agreed to this request. In the years 1959-1963 it furnished <br /> <br />$125,000 to the Bureau of Reclamation for further studies on the <br /> <br />South Platte River. Other expenditures in the approximate sum of <br /> <br /> <br />$75,000 were made from state funds for the employment of consultants <br /> <br /> <br />and for the time and expenses of the Board's regular staff. Sub- <br /> <br /> <br />stantial sums of money were also made available by the Congress for <br /> <br /> <br />the preparation of a new feasibility report on the project. <br /> <br /> <br />By the late summer of 1964 all facets of the project had <br /> <br /> <br />been explored to the point where it was again submitted to the Colo- <br /> <br /> <br />rado Water Conservation Board for policy decision. At a meeting held <br /> <br />in Fort Morgan on September 12, 1964, the Board reached and approved <br /> <br />the following conclusions: <br />1. That further site selection investigations would be <br /> <br />fruitless. <br /> <br />2. That the construction of the Narrows project would <br /> <br />-5- <br />
