The A.R.S. time operated gates continue to ~ork well in the level
ditches with level fields. Many farmers who work at other jobs will find
these timed gates a distinct advantage. This system enables the farmer to
set his irrigation once a day and irrigate each set with timed precision.
The Soil Conservation Service will want to recommend this system in their
salinity control program.

In the north field only. \"here the supply di teh is on a slope ~!"ade the
time operated gates ,,,ill back the water up to trigger a pair of float gates.
In this manner three boarders are irrigated at one time. ~lany times the
latches on the float gates would fail to actuate even after considerable
modification. Finally Mr. Hood suggested that we use a string to tie the
gates together so that the positive action 0: the timed gate as it fell
would pull the latch on the second gate and in 1 ike manner the second
gate ;...ould pull the third. This arrangement has .....orked Idthout failure.
Since this is a unique system here in the valley ",'e ,",'ill probably not be
faced I'o.ith this problem again, hOl..ever, this system of ~ates \dll work ,,'ell
any ....here one has a sloping ditch.

\\'e purchased the suI fur for a test plot on the Hood farm. The Agricultural Research Service has been taking samples
throughout the summer on these plots and as soon as the analysis is completed

- 1 -
