<br />~ <br />W' <br /> <br />Earth & RockfiJI Dams <br /> <br />DILLON DAM <br /> <br /> <br />GREAT WESTERN DAM <br /> <br /> <br />COLORADO <br /> <br />The Denver-based firm provided inves- <br />tigations, embankment design criteria <br />and construction consultation for the' <br />15 million cubic yard zoned embank- <br />ment of Dillon dam, storing a major <br />portion of Denver's water. A 90-foot <br />deep cutoff was excavated through <br />pervious gravels to bedrock and re- <br />filled with compacted clay. Project <br />design was by Tipton and Kalmbach, <br />I nc., Denver. <br /> <br />BROOMFIELD, COLORADO <br /> <br />The Great Western earth dam at <br />Broomfield was originally constructed <br />in 1903 and raised to a height of 70 <br />feet in 1958. Following the raising, <br />dowstream slope sliding developed. <br />The firm, retained by Nelson, Haley, <br />Patterson & Quirk, Greeley, made <br />investigations of the engineering <br />properties of the dam foundation and <br />embankment, and furnished reo, <br />commended criteria for repair. <br />
