~
,.,

Earth ~ Rockfill Dams

UPPER URAD DAM

BINGHAM CREEK DAM

EMPIRE, COLORADO

The Denver-based firm, in JOint ven-
ture with W. W. Wheeler and Associ-
ates, Denver, was retained by
American Metal Climax, Inc., to de-
sign and observe construction of the
400,000 cubic yard Upper Urad dam
and spillway. Special design problems
were caused by the dam location, high
in Colorado's mountains, major snow-
slides into the reservoir and a deep
glacial till formation.

COPPERTON, UTAH

Design of this dam and appurtenant
facilities was by a joint venture with
Ketchum, Konkel, Ryan and Fleming,
also of Denver. The problem of reser-
voir-bottom seepage was solved by
major reservoir blanketing. Client for
the project was Kennecott Copper
corporation. I nvestigations had d is-
closed a pervious deep overburden in
the foundation and abutments. The-
spillway was placed over the embank-
ment, rather than over an abutment as
is normal to avoid inferior foundation -
conditions on the abutments.
