In addition, the Bureau of Land Manage-
ment should budget a one-time sum of $100,000 to purchase
an install facilities for monitoring salinity from areas
which a.e known to contribute significant 1ioliunes of salt.
The Bureau of Land Management should budget annually suffi-
cient funds to operate these monitoring devices.
The Council also recommends that BLM continue research
into evapotranspiration on rangeland sites as it affects
ground water recharge and the mechanics of underflow as a
potential contributor to salt loading. Research should
also continue on the effects of grazing on infiltration,
runoff. sedimentation and erosion.
The Bureau of Land Management's 1977 Status Report,
"The Effect of Surface Disturbance on the Salinity of
Public Lands in the Colorado River Basin", presented
means of reducing salt yields in the Upper Basin. The
Council would like to be advised as to the policy and
objectives of BLM's salinity control program, specific
control practices being developed to alleviate salinity,
and progress toward achieving objectives.

$

,
,
