It does not
appear that any town or city in that portion of the basin's area in
Weld Cpunty will have a population greater than 5,000 by 1980. Since
the e~isting towns in that area are some distance from each other, it
is unlikely 'that annexations or consolidations will occur in the
foreseeable future. Below is a tabulation of historical population
for towns and cities in Weld County that were identified as being in
the St. Vrain Creek basin. At present, there are no towns or cities
in that portion of Adams County in the basin.

Town or city

Historical population
1940 1950 1960

1,019 937 875
296 258 302
262 297 276
652 599 595
--..12.J, 186__].2g
~ 2,277 ~

.

Erie
Dacono
Firestone
Frederick
Meade
Total

The population projections which have been made for Boulder
County reflect continuing growth because of an expected expansion
of the Denver metropolitan area. Additional growth will be realized
beCause of new industries locating in and near principal towns and
cities in the area. It is entirely conceivable that population growth
could far exceed the estimates made here. Intensive expansion in the
Denver area will be in two principal directions, north and south.
During recent years, an increase in new industry has occurred in the
northern portion of the Denver area. Some evidence of this develop-
ment is already shown by the construction of a large IBM plant north-
east of Boulder near the community of Niwot. It is estimated that
this plant will employ about 3,000 persons. Other industrial enter-
prises north and east of Boulder are currently being developed. This
trend is expected for some time in the future, but its extent and
duration are not known.

.

34

~:. ,.' _i,~"_,~ __,~'--

-,~""~' -'-<,';:"-
