"j (j'

General Description

ECONOMY

Mining and agriculture are historic and continuing bases of
Boulder County's econonw. These are now augmented by expanding
educational, scientific, manufacturing, and commercial enterprises
in and near the principal cities. Tourist trade has thrived and
expanded decade after decade.

The large and diversified agricultural production places the
county etghth in Colorado for farm income. About 48 percent of the
county's acreage is in farmlands, a large proportion of which is
irrigated.

Boulder, the county seat and principal city, has experienced
great economic and population growth since 1950. Major contributing
factors have been the tremendous expansion of scientific research
at the University of Colorado and at Federal and other national
establishments in and near the city and concurrent development of
numerous allied manufacturing plants. Longmont and Lafayette, the
second and third largest cities in the county, also have grown and
prospered because of new industrial developments in their vicinities
and associated increases in construction, retailing, and service
trades.

Other incorporated towns of Boulder County include: rapidly
growing Broomfield near Denver; Louisville and Lyons, trading centers
in the agricultural and tourist areas, respectively; and Ward,
JamestoWn, and Nederland, mountain communities.

PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS

Previous Bureau investigations of significance in the St. Vrain '
Creek area were primarily concerned with reregulation of existing
streamflows and production of hydroelectric power. These studies
were included in the "Report on the South Platte River Basin,
Colorado-Wyoming-Nebraska" dated June 1959.

5

".-./<,'
