Paul.sen, Chief, Water R~sources Division

The Geological Survey as a ruearch il-nd inVestigational agency,
has as a major function cQ].lection and analy'.sis of basic water resources
data. The Survey dOes not take part in development of water resources,
but its determination of the CJ.uantityand quality of ground and surface
waters is of utmost importance in planning 01' operating developments.
The most widely known activity of the Water Resources Division is the
streamgaging program. In 1953 there wer~ 490 gaging stations in the
Colorado Rivet Basin, including records of storage and diversiona and
records furnished by .other agencies. Recqrds of all trans~mountain
diversionll are,now being published in annl$-l wa.ter.aupply papers.
Although the program has gtQWn continuously, the number of stations
is still inadequate for resolving all proble~s of equi.table apportionment
and depletionaof Colorado River water. 'I'he Sw:vey hall studied the I;l.et.
work of atations propo.sed by the Colorado River Board of California.
Indications are that this study will ahow ne"d for many neW stations.

This year compilation of all stream40w records collected in the
basin was completed. The report is beinglproceued and ahould appear
as Water~Supp1y Paper 1313 next spring. ,All monthly and annua.ltecords
through September 1950 have bellln revieweidi reanalyzed, revised whel;'e
neceuary, and summarized.. Smal1 gaps ;in s.ome were eatimated.

Country-wide thete is great need foJ! smalL-area gaging. station
records. The Survey has expanded its progra.mon small. streams. mOlltly
in cooperation with State highway departmjents, to determine and analyze
streamflow characteristics at bri.dge sites. At pre.sent the onl,y state
in the Colorado River Basin in which we a~e operating a special coopera~
tive program with the highway departmen~is New Mexico.
