<l

Dredging of the Colorado River channel continued through the year.
Maintenance and retention work was performed on the completed Needles-
Topock section. Three miles of channel has been completed above
Needles. Study of the permanent solution of the Palo Verde diversion
problem was continued. Topographic mapping and diamond drilling e.x-
ploration at the damsite were completed in October. Preliminary design
and estimates for a diversion dam are being made. . Preliminary designs
and estimates for alternative solutions are complete. The six-million
dollar Rehabilitation and Betterment program on the Salt River Project
continues. Work includes lateral pipe line, fullerform and jetcrete lateral
lining, replacement of lateral structures, and rehabilitation of wells.

..

Farmers receiving water through Bureau constructed facilities in
the Lower Basin set a record in 1952 when they harvested crops valued
at 226 million dollars from 887, ZOO acres, an average of 255 dollars per
acre. Several specialty crops averaged over $1,000 per acre. The area
on which these crops were produced includes the Coachella and Imperial
DivisiOns of the All-American Canal System, California; Yuma Project,
Arizona-California; Yuma Auxiliary Project, Gila Project and Salt River
Project in Arizona; and lands served by special contracts from the Salt
River and Gila Projects.

"

A year ago we dedicated Davis Dam. The remaining minor con-
struction work has bel"n in progress. The transmission system of the
Project as originally planned is essentially complete. Work will continue
through 1953. . Last April the contract with the Arizona Power Authority
by which the Bureau will wheel energy generated at the new privately-
owned Saguaro Steam Plant between Coolidge and Tucson was approved.
Delivery will be made over the Parker-Davis system to load points in
Nevada and Arizona through new and enlarged substations for which the
Bureau will be compensated by the Power Authority. Design and construc-
tion of these additions is in progress. Agreement was reached by which
the State of Nevada and the City of Los Ang.eles will participate in the
installation costs and capacity of the final unit, N-8, soon to be installed
at Hoover Dam, with a new transformer. Design and specification is in
progress.

Investigation of the Las Vegas Pumping Project, being initiated,
involves study of possible irrigation development On home sites of less
than 10 acres for part-time farmers, development of irrigated commer-
cial farms, and furnishing additional domestic and industrial water by
pumping from Lake Mead. In order to meet immediate water needs the
Las Vegas Valley Water District voted a bond issue last September, to
enable the District to connect its system to the pipe line from Lake Mead
to Henderson. Capacity of the Henderson line will be increased by addi-
tional pumps. The amount of water available to Las Vegas through the
line would about offset the present overdraft on the groundwater basin.
The Bureau and the District are coordinating their planning for future
water development in the area.

"

..

"

Investigations for Bridge and Marble dam projects on Colorado
River and Coconino on Little Colorado River are virtually complete.
With additional sediment records we are supplementing aui' previous
sedimentation studies for the Coconino site.
