Sever8.l times in the past. few year s we have rushed emergency
flood~fighting teams to areas threatened by floods, pllincipally in the
Upper Ballin. Fortunately, during the past .eason, there were no floods
or disasters in. the Colorado River Basin. l-Jowever, we stand ready at
any time to perform emergency work.

*-

Another project authorized several. years ago, for Tucson,Arizona, and
vicinity, has been recommended for de4author,ization because 10c8.l in-
terests have constructed a project that provid~s much of the protection
that would have been provided by the Federal project. Congress, this year
authorbed a flood-control project for lower Agua Fl:'ia River and vicinity,
Arizona. .

l!;
t;:
(
t.

None of these authorized projects are under construction. However,
civil planning funds have been made available for Painted Rock Res.ervoir
and Air Force planning funds for the project on Agua Fria River. Plan-
ning for these projects will continue during the fiscal year. Construction
(tentatively scheduled fol:' initiation in c8.lendar year 1955) is dependent
upon funding. Plans and specifications for Trilby Wash Detention Basin
are scheduled for completion 15 January 1954. The plan provides for the
detention basin on Trilby Wash, and an outlet : channel to convey flood
releases to Agua Fria River. Trilby Wash Dam would be earth-fill
49,500 feet long, and 34 feet high, with a Z, OOO-foot spillway at the left
abutment. The improvement, estimated at $3,000,000, would provide
protection fo!;' military installations, 3 town.s and 50,000 acres of
cultivated land.

For Painted Rock Dam foundation explorations are practically
completed, and detailed planning studies are peing pushed for the embank-
ment and the spillway. General design studiEiS, which precede plans and
specifications, are scheduled for completion l.n July 1954. This dam
would be earth-fill 4,470 feet long and 174 feet high. The resel:'voir
capacity would be Z, 480, 000 acre-feet, including ZOO, 000 l:'eserved foi:'
sediment. The improvement, estimated at $35,000,000 wouldprovide
flood protection along Gila and lower Colorado Rivers, arid in Imperial
Valley.

Another indication of our future plans in your behalf is the large
backlog of Colorado River Basin authorized flood~control investigations.
Little money has been available for these investigations for several years -
none during the past lZ months. The investigations include:

~.

f

Preliminary examinations of CC)lorado River and
tributaries above Lee Ferry, and Las Vegas Wash
and tributaries;

Surveys of Virgin River and triputaries, Animas
River, Kanab Creek, Dolores and Dolores River
Basin upstream from Dolores, land Gila River and.
tributaries; and .

Review of the report on Lit1;le Colorado River (Gallup).

...
..

-Z-
