Frye Jr., District Engineer, Los Angeles

-
t
1
I

The Los Angeles District of the Corps of Engineers looks fO:l:ward
every year to these opportunities for gaining first-hand information about
your problems and about possibilities for our being of assistance. During
the past few years, funds appropriated by Congress for construction and
planning by the Corps have been primarily for military ,projects. The
engineering and construction organization of the Corps with. the know-how
to plan and construct civil works has been an al...,ays available organiza-
tion f()rthe vital engineering tasks of modern war. Conver sely. military-
engineering know-how can be turned to peaceful endeavors. Some day
the military situation may improve to the point where we can concentrate
on the Civil-Works program entrusted to us by the Congress. Meantime
we have not neglected basic planning for the future resumption of those
activities.

The only flood-control project completed in the Colorado River Basin
is the levee at Holbrook, Arizona, on the Little Colorado River. It was
compl.eted in December 1948 at a total Federal cost of $335, 000. . However,
a huge backlog of projects authorized several years ago awaits only the
appropriation of planning and construction money by the Congress. These
include:

t

Alamo Reservoir on Bill Williams River in Arizona,
Whitlow.Ranch Reservoir on Queen Creek.in Arizona,
Pine and Mathews Canyons Flood-Control Reservoirs
on tributaries of Meadow Valley Wa.sh in Nevada, and
Painted Rock Flood-Control Reservoir on Gila River
in Arizona.

,

-1-
