local agencies. Results are summarized in "Use of Water by Native
Vegetation," State Bulletin No. 50, and "Irr~gation Requirements of
Californillo Crop.s," State BUlletin No. 5L A ,report on flConsumptive
Water Use and Requirements in the C.olorado River Area of Utah," pub-
lished by the Utah State Agri~ultural College in Mar~h 1953, presents
results of. a study by the Division of Irrigation Engineering and Water
Conservation, the Utah State ~ngineer ,and' the Utah Agricultural Experi-
ment Station. Methods used to determine consumptive use were (a) soil
moisture depletion, (b) tank or lysimeter for, unit values, (c) inflow-out-
flow and. (d) integration for larger valley areas, Unit rates determined
by this study are recommended for use in the Utah portionof the
Colorado River Basin.

Estimates of Consumptive Use In Colorado River Basin

Because of the few measurements in the Colorado River Basin,
rates of water use were computed by the empirical formula (U . KF).
In 1948, at the request of the Upper Colorado River Compact Commis-
sion, representing Arizona, Colorado, New, Mexico, Utah. and Wyoming
. and the, Federal Government, study was made of water consumption by
crops and native vegetation in the Upper Basin, and a report on consump-
tive-userates for 56 areas was submitted. Similar estimates on a
statewide basis were pubUshed in these provisional reports: "Consump-
tive Use and Irrigation Requirements of Crops in Colorado", "Consumptive
Use and Irrigation Water Requirements of <;::rops in New Mexico"; "Con-
sumptive Use of Water and Irrigation Requi,rements of Crops in UtahH;
and "Estimate of Water Requirements of Ctops in .Wyoming". In 1952,
at the request of a Technical Committee representing the Bureau of
Reclamation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Navajo Tribal Council, and the
Interstate Engineer of New Mexico, special investigation in the San Juan
Basi.n waS reported upon: "Irrigation Water Requirements of Crops in
the Shiprockand South San Juan Projects in New Mexic.o".

During 1951-52, at the request of the Bureau of Reclamation, study
was made. and reported upon as "Consump~ive Use of Water Rates in the
Lower Colorado River Basin". Estimates; of unit consumptive use by
crops are based primarily on the me;l.sure;ments made in satt River
Valley, Arizona. Estimates of water con$umption by native vegetation
are based mostly on observations by the U:. S. Geological Survey in
Safford Valley, Arizona. These data were transferred to other areas
of the Lower Basin through relationships established empirically between
measured consumptive use and climatological data. In 1950, a report,
"Consumptive Use of Irrigation Water by Crops in Nevada" was prepared
in coope1"ation with the Nevada Agricultural Ex,periment Station. Pre-
liminary study is being made in coope1"atipn with the State Engineer,on
consumptive use of water rates by irrigat;ed lands in the Colorado River
'Basin of Nevada. ':

In June 1953 a p1'ovisional. report, "Estimates of Evaporation from
Salton Sea, California" was prepared at the request of the California
Division of Water Resources, summarizing results of early pan measure-
ments and e.stimates. Average estimateljl of annual evaporation .by previous
investigator s range fromM. 8 inches for: 1907 -13 to 73.7 inches in 1907 -08.
P,~eliminary estimates for the5-year pe*iod 1948 to 1952, based on studies by

-14-

.

...

.

.

"

.
