<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />"""' <br />0') <br />00 <br /> <br />i. .. <br /> <br />C") <br /> <br />.~~..... <br />,- <br /> <br />Introduction <br /> <br />This status report has been prepared in response to a March 4, 1986, <br />letter from the Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Forum (Forum) to <br />the upper Colorado Region of the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation). In <br />the letter, the Forum requested that Reclamation prepare an assessment of <br /> <br />the proposed technology for the Salt Tolerant Emergent plant (STEP) pro- <br /> <br /> <br />cess to beneficially use and dispose of saline water for a Forum Work <br /> <br />Group meeting to be held in Salt Lake City, utah, on April 3 & 4, 1986. <br /> <br />The Forum's letter requested further that Reclamation give the Work Group <br />preliminary recommendations as to the need for further investigation of <br />the STEP process. <br />This report briefly discusses the STEP process and the proposal for <br />development. Also included are discussions of unresolved issues which <br />could be considered obstacles to development of a viable pIan, costs of <br />the proposed development pIan, Reclamation's conclusions about studies <br />made to date, and recommendations for future efforts. <br /> <br />Description of the proposal <br />A December 1985 report prepared by International Bio-Resources, Inc. <br />(IBR), and Denver Engineering Corporation(DEC)ll presents a preliminary <br />assessment of the STEP process. The purpose of the assessment was to re- <br />view the process for economic and technical flaws that could prevent its <br />successful development. <br />The STEP process is a pollution control technology designed to col- <br /> <br />lect, make beneficial use of, and dispose of saline flows in the Glenwood <br /> <br />Springs, Colorado, area through the managed production of salt tolerant <br /> <br />11 preliminar~ Assessment of the Salt Tolerant Emergent plant (STEP) <br />Process for e Beneficial Use and Disposal of Saline water, Final <br />Report to the Colorado River Water Quality Office, Bureau of Reclamation, <br />u.S.
