Mr. Malcolm Stewart, the

previoua owner of the Zapata Ranch. reports that 1,347 acres of native hay

were irrigated on the ranch. Al1lIlysis of aerial pbotographs flown in

1963, 1974, and June of 1988 confirm that a large ares on the ranch has

been irrigated. A detailed analysis of tbe 1974 aerial photographs

reveals that. in that dry year. at least 642 acres of land were flood

irrigated by water rights off the Zapata Creeks; irrigated areas on the

ranch are shown on Figure 3. as evidenced by the 1974 photograph.

Analysis of the 1963 and 1988 aerial photos indicated that the 642 acres

irrigated in 1974 was a minimum. IInd tbat during IIverage or wet years,

more lands were irrigated by the water rights on the ranch. According to

Mr. Stewart. the principal crop grown under the ditches was native hay.

but at times in the past. grains. oats. and alfalfa have also been

cultivated.

Seven ditcbes vere used for irrigation on tbe Zapata Rancb. Decreed
points of diversion locations are shown on Figure 2. Information about
tbese ditches is summarized in Table 3. Water rights attached to these
structures vere decreed in 1895 and 1915; entitlements awarded to the
ditche.'.' . , 9AlvM.>'~cfa for irrigation uees. Diversion records as
reported by the Division 3 Engineer's Office were reviewed and tabulsted
in Tables 4 through 10. Because Malcolm Stewart owned all the water
rights in the Zapata Creeks and their tributaries, he sometimes left the
water rights in the stream at tbeir diversion points snd took the water
instead at other points downstream; tbe Little Alta Ditch is an example of
tbis practice.

- 10 -

,
