Stewart Mountain Dam

Construction or a new spillway on the dam's right abutment was completed in the sum-
mcr of 1990, as was thc rehabilitation or the dam's rivcr outlet works and powcr
penstocks, This work was performed to protect Stewart Mountain Dam rrom failure as
a result or an extremely large Oood,
In addition, concr~te overlays havc bcen placcd at sclectcd locations on the dam to help
stabilize it and prevent it Crom failing jf struck by an earthquake. Currenlly, H-I- :'-otecl c(ihk~
~re being illstalled through the dam's concreic arch cillO left thrust block anJ into its
foundation to further help stabilize it and prevent it from disintegrating in the event of
an earlhquake. This work began in January 1991 and is scheduled to be completed in
Fcbruary 1992.

Theodore Roosevelt Dam

Realignment and widening or about 3 112 miles of the Apache Trail in the vicinity or the
dam has bcen completed. This work was performed to make the roadway safer for thc
lraveiing public and for construction workers.

Construction of new river outlet works for the dam continues, Thesc features include:

. a 20-foot-diameter, 58-foot-deep Inke tap shaft that will release watcr frolll
Roosevelt Lake to the river outlet tunneL The excavation or the vertical
portion of the lake tap shaft is complete and the stecllincr has becn installed,

. a 990-foot-long river outlet tunnel that will carry thc watcr from the lakc tap
to thc river below the dam; excavation is complete.

. a 356-foot-long branch tunnel, a power penstock tunnel, that will divert the
water from the lake tap to Rooscvelt Power plant; this tunncl has been fully
excavated, and backfill concrete placements around the sleclliner are
complete;

. a 31O-foOl-deep gale shaCt that will house the equipment necessary for
raising or lowering a gate into the river outlet works tunnel; concrcte lining of
this shaft is completc,

The Roosevelt Dam modifications contract was awarded last Febroary to J.A. Jones
Construction Company and is scheduled to be completed by July 1995. The modificd
dam will bc 77 feet highcr and will includc ncw spillways.
