A sharp reduction in the Region's
mining employment is projected for the 1965-80 period. After 1980,
mining employment is projected to stabilize with nominal increases pro-
jected to 2020. Manufacturing employment is projected to increase by
2.1 percent annually between 1965 and 2020. Employment in transporta-
tion, communications and public utilities is projected to increase at
a lower rate than the avrerage growth in total employment for the
Region. Employment in wholesale and retail trade is projected to in-
crease at an average rate of 1.7 percent over the projection period.
Projections of employment for the service industries reflect a con-
tinuation of the long-term shift in the relative importance of services
in the Region's economy.

For. the Region as a whole, OBE-ERS personal income is projected
to increase from approximately $3.0 billion in 1965 to $40.6 billion
in 2020.' This projected increase represents an average growth of 4.8
percent annually. The Region's per capita income is projected to in-
crease from $2,602 in 1965 to $12,679 by 2020, an average growth of
2.9 percent annually.

Estimates of gross regional product evolved from the input-output
projections work within the OBE-ERS framework. Gross regional product
is the market value of finished goods and services produced by the
Region's economy within a specified period of time.

Gross regional product was projected to increase at the average
annual rate of 6.3 percent in the IS-year period 1965-1980, reaching
a total of $8,435 million by 1980. A lower rate of growth was projec-
ted for the 20-year period 1980, 2000 with an average annual rate of
4.7 percent. A 4.4 percent growth rate for the period 2000-2020 was
projected. The values were $21,217 million for 2000 and $50,689 million
for 2020.

The 1964 Census of Agriculture reported a total irrigated area of
1,730,000 acres in the Great Basin Region. Of that total, 1,215,000
acres were irrigated cropland harvested. With crop yields at those
levels projected under the OBE-ERS analysis, total projected irrigated
acreage is 1,714,000 in 1980, 1,750,000 in 2000 and 1,795,000 in the
year 2020. Projected irrigated cropland harvested is 1,163,000 in
1980, 1,192,000 in 2000 and 1,233,000 in 2020. The balance of projected
irrigated land is pasture.

Production from the projected irrigated land with projected forage
from rangelands would provide adequate forage for the quantities of
livestock and poultry and livestock and poultry products in the OBE-ERS
projections. The Great Basin would, however, remain a large importer
of feed grains under the OBE-ERS projections.

ii
