Each
initial inventory units will thus be a roadless tract of public land
that may range in size from one acre upwards. Districts having common
boundaries should work together closely in identification of contiguous
inventory units.

A "situation evaluation" will be developed for each initial inventory
unit or ~roup of units as appropriate (Appendix 4 of Wilderness Inventory
Handbook). The situation evaluation provides information on the general
condition and present situation of an initial inventory unit. Situation
evaluations will be developed from existing knowledge and data (aerial
photos, maps, transportation plans, etc.); however, field verification
may be needed in certain limited cases. Based upon the situation evaluations,
District Managers will formulate initial recommendations on which initial
inventory units should or obviously should not undergo intensive wilderness
inventory and foreward these recommendations to the SO for review.

Where Districts have had to proceed with wilderness inventory work,
prior to issuance of the BLM Wilderness Inventory Handbook in support of
scheduled planning for upcoming Range ESs. the areas identified as
having wilderness values through the advanced inventory will be sub-
mitted with an appropriate explanation. These areas will be referenced
on the State initial inventory map and highlighted as Potential Wilder-
ness Study Areas and undergo Statewide public review along with initial
inventory units.

Date

Process Element To Be Completed

Districts conduct initial inventory
to identify roadless units of pUblic
land, complete situation evaluation
for each unit and make recommendations
to the SO as to which inventory units
should undergo intensive wilderness
inventory.
