. .

;/'....
i$~"
V,_:_,71

SUPPLELMENT TO QUESTION AND ANSWER SECTION

MUNICIPAL AND INDUSTRIAL WATER
DURANGO SERVICE AREA!!
Development With Animas-La Plata Project

Present Uses

The city of Durango, Colorado, obtains its raw water supply
from both the Florida and Animas Rivers. The city has an absolute
direct flow water right of 8.92 second-feet from the Florida River
and 6.00 second-feet from the Animas River. The city also has a
conditional direct flow water right from the Animas River of 44.00
second-feet. The Durango City Pipeline diverts water from the
Florida River about 10 miles east of the city and has a capacity of
10.1 second-feet. The pipeline delivers water to the Durango res-
ervoir No.2 (Terminal Reservoir). The reservoir has an active
capacity of 129.5 acre-feet. The Animas Pump and Force Main con-
sists of a pumping plant of the Animas River and a' 1.3 mile pipe-
line leading to the Terminal Reservoir. These facilities have a
capacity of about 9.28 second-feet to the reservoir and 1.01 second-
feet to the Municiapl Golf Course and Fort Lewis COllege for irriga-
tion. Green Mount Pump Station located on the Animas River at
Ninth Street, was installed in 1974 and is capable of delivering
about 1.33 second-feet of raw water to Green Mount Cemetary for ir-
rigation. The High School Pump Station, located near 25th Street
was installed in 1977 and is capable of delivering 1.33 second-feet
of raw water to the High School for irrigation.
The city of Durango owns and maintains a 12 million gallon per
day (MGD) treatment plant which receives water from the Terminal
Reservoir. Treatment consists of sedimentation, filtration, and
chlorination. The city also has 10 million gallons of treated water
storage. Essentially all commercial water users are metered, but
residential use is unmetered at the present time. The city of
Durango sells treated water to the South Durango and Northeast
Durango Water District and the Animas Water Company.
From 1970 to 1976 the city of Durango has produced an average
of 1,596.7 MG of treated water per year. Use of raw water for ir-
rigation purposes had averaged about 70 MG over the same period.
Per capita use rates of water in the area serviced by the city of
Durango have averaged about 385 gallons per capita per day (GPCD)
over the past seven years. This figure includes both treated and
raw water use.

Projected Needs

Estimates prepared by the Bureau of Reclamation indicate that
the population of the Durango service area is most likely to in-
crease as follows:

Year
Population

1970
10,333

1976
16,600

1980
19,000

1990
26,500

2000
33,600

2010
40,600

2020
48,900

!!

Includes areas now serves by South Duranqo Water District, North-
east Water District and Animas Water Compnay together with anti-
cipated expansions to the areas of the Animas Airport, Durango
West, Tamarron and to the Animas-Florida divide on Florida Road.

-l-
