The
Bureau estimates that New Mexico's increase of water consumption
for the San .Juan projects listed would be 450,000 acre feet a year p
New Mexico says that actual increase of consumption probably
would be nearer 1,000,000 acre feet a year.

..

MR. MATTHEW: That is rather an interesting comment
from New Mexico in vidw of preliminary reports that in the Lower Basins,
the needs of New Mexico and Utah would be satisfied by an estimated amount
of 135,000 acre feet in terms of main stream depletion.

New Mexico says that the Hammolld and Pine River Extension
Projects should be started in the neal" future and the La Plata Project
should be constructed as soon as possible. That's a brief summary of the
New Mexico comment~), as nearly as we could brief theln for your information,.
I take it that New Mexico feels that they should have a large share in the
water, both in the Upper Basin and the Lower Basin, and that the report
seems to be incomplete as far as potentialiti.es in New Mexico are cOIICerned.

Does anybody here have any remarks or discussion on the New
Mexico comments?

CHAIRMAN. I would like to know what amount of
transportation of water takes place from Colorado under the compact into
New Mexico, using water of the Colorado River Basin in the and
Rio Grande. I know they have signed a compact and I have heard abolt
their 5% water they are entitled to--has already been taken tlllt up in
Colorado, and thrown over into the Rio Grande system. Most of the land
that they wish to irrigate is in the Rio Grande basin. They have a large
project there on the Navajo Indian Reservation.

MlIC. MATTHEW ~ Mr. Moritz is here. Perhaps we should
ask him to eKpound this, but therels a tabulation in the report on the
division here of eKports from the San Juan Division. Mr. Moritz,
is that the only present eKportation, in answer'to Mr. Jenkins' question
from Colorado over into New Mexico?

MR. MORITZ~ All I know is what.is in that report. Thatls
out of my territory, the Upper Basin.

-36-

~~.

:9
