I)re Water for Arid Southwest

These units of the Colorado River Basin
Salinity Control Project will make more
water available for use in the arid but
agriculturally productive Southwest. The
desalting complex will be capable of
salvaging about 123,000 acre-feet of
irrigation drainage each year. Lining the
first 49 miies of the Coachella Canal will
prevent the annual seepage 1055 of nearly
132,000 acre~feet, while the protective and
regulatory pumping program is expected to
recover about 125,000 acre.feet of usable
ground water each year.

Completion of these phases of the
Colorado River Basin Salinity Control
Project wili enable the United States to
meet the terms of the 1944 Treaty as to
quantity and Minute No. 242 as to quality
while at the same time salvaging most of
the Wellton-Mohawk drainage water.
