Comparative esti-
mates show a two dam combination Horseshoe Canyon-Ashley to have a lower
construction cost than a high earth or concrete dam at Ashley. However,
comparative studies will be necessary to determine differences in power
production and other factors which could effect the comparative economy
of the two plans.

Field inspections were made of the Kanab-Glen Canyon access road
route, potential construction town sites, and pOSSible sources of muni-
cipal water. Water from the existing well on Clarks Bench was found to
be generally satisfactory for domestic use but the samples taken from
Paria River and Wahweep Creek were considerably higher in chemical con-
stituents than the limits recommended by the Public Health Service. From
the standpoint of topography any number of potential town sites are avail-
able, however, the soil at all locations is very sandy and. non-cohesive.

~ion

Plan formulation studies on Curecanti unit were continued.
drilling on Blue Mesa dam site was started.

Founda-

East Cache Project, utah-Idaho

The June 1954 feasibility report is being revised to eliminate the
Bla~ksmith Division from the project plan.

Bear River Project, Utah-Idaho

Land classification field work was completed in Blue Valley and is
continuing in Curlew Valley. Extensive laboratory analyses are being made
of the soils in Curlew Valley to determine suitability of the 'luestionable
areas for irrigation development. Progress has been slow on the coopera-
tive studies with Fish and Wildlife Service to determine feasibility of
additional storage at Cutler Reservoir or at Willard Bay to enlarge the
Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge.

1269
