It is anticipated that expansion of this
feature together with a gradual increase in the number of gaging
stations elsewhere will require a state contribution in the order
of $400,000 by 1961-62.
Cooperative Ground Water Program (U.S.G.S.)
The Geological Survey has been conducting ground water
studies or collecting ground water data in portions of California
since the turn of the century. Starting in 1940 detailed investi-
gations of several southern California ground water basins were
conducted in cooperation with local agencies. In 1948 the
Geological Survey was invited to cooperate with the then Division
of Water Resources in the evaluation of geologic factors affecting
ground water throughout the State. Special investigations presently
being conducted are the subsidence study in the San Joaquin Valley,
and specific yield studies elsewhere. The program calls for a state
contribution of $140,000 in 1959-60,
Cooperative Leveling Program (U.S.C. and G.S.)
Several areas of California are subsiding at rates in
excess of one-foot per year. The U, S. Coast and Geodetic Survey
has been conducting special surveys of the affected areas for
several years. Since 1954 the State has participated to a limited
extent through membership on the Inter-agency Committee on Land
Subsidence in San Joaquin Valley. While no funds are available
for direct cooperation with the Coast and Geodetic Survey this
year, it is anticipated that $30,000 will be appropriated for

-2-

. .
