"11959
N ' -

November 24, 1959

\,;'.,.j .',dirt
t~'jSbj\ .r,~:~ ~OAI\~
During the current fiscal year a total of about
$1,056,000 will be contributed by the California Department of
Water Resources in support of seven Federal-State cooperative
programs, five of which are conducted by the Geological Survey,
one by the Forest Service and one by the Agricultural Research
Service. A brief discussion of the programs follows.
Cooperative Mapping Program (U.s.G.S.)
TOpographic mapping in California has been on a coopera-
tive basis since 1904, state contributions having ranged from
$3,000 in that year to $355,000 in 1959-60. Priorities assigned
are (1) presently unmapped areas, (2) areas formerly mapped to
presently unsatisfactory standards, (3) areas where larger scale
maps are needed, and (4) areas where revisions of culture are
needed. The last unmapped area is scheduled for completion in
Fiscal Year 1963. Remapping of areas in priorities 2 and 3 will

probably require another ten years. Map maintenance under priority
4 is, of course, a continuing program.
Stream Flow Measuring Program (U.S.G.S.)
The Federal Government has maintained a stream flow
measuring program in California since 1894. State participation
started in 1903. Of the more than ,700 gaging stations presently
operated by the Geological Survey in California, 385 are operated
under the Federal-State matching fund program. During Fiscal Year
1959-60 the State's contribution will be about $364,000.

-j .' -..:l,- _ --~, .

t~
