Water storage in Flaming Gorge, Blue Mesa, and Navajo

would experience a small net reduction by about a year from now.

It is interesting to note that storage in Lake Powell is at an all

time high and is rising. Lake Powell contains about 9,000,000 acre-feet

of its total capacity of 27,000,000 acre-feet. The lake has a surface

area of about 69,000 acres and the depth of water at the dam is about 400

feet as compared with a total depth when full of 560 feet.

GENERAL INVESTIGATIONS

Completion of feasibility reports and related work on the Animas

La Plata, Dolores, Dallas Creek, West Divide, and San Miguel projects has

been expedited so that

pending legislation on

authorization can be considered in connection with
the c<::i'f!'~~f7S~"'fr~,,~~.c&.r. (#,e~71)

)/ The Mimas La Plata feasibility report was returned to the Secretary

of the Interior by the Bureau of the Budget with the suggestion that the

plan be further reviewed as to water pollution, direct benefits and costs,

and other matters. A supplement to the report has been completed. The

Animas La Plata project, as modified by these studies, would regulate the

unusual flows of the Animas and La Plata Rivers for irrigation of non-

Indian and Indian lands and municipal and industrial use at Durango, Colo-

rado, and Farmington, New Mexico, and at other communities and prospec~

tive industrial sites in the project area. The project would provide a

supplemental water supply to 25,600 acres of land inadequately irrigated

3
