"~
',,"
",? be made between "before" and "after" habitat quantities to determine the
"-~

(::..~

amount of change. "After" conditions would include samplIng immediately

following installation of measures and approximately 10 years later.

Habitat types will initially be mapped on orthophotos with a scale of

1 inch = 200 feet or on 8-inch to the mile photos. Subsequent mapping wil be

done on acetate overlays of the sample sites.

The following habitat types or conditions will be mapped and quantities

measured: agricultural crops (by kind), saltbrush, sagebrush, greasewood,

tamarak, cottonwood, willow, marsh (by type), edge (boundaries, field

borders, etc.).

There are three distinct agricultural areas in the Grand Valley: (1)

downstream from Grand Junction lying primarily north of the Colorado River;

(2) Palisade vicinity; and (3) Orchard Mesa. Sampling intensity wIll be

applied as follows: 75 percent of sample on agricultural units in the area

downstream from Grand Junction, with 25 percent divided between the other

two areas.

Total habitat changes due to the onfarm salinity control program will be

determined. This will be done by extrapolation using a ratio of habitat

change to acres treated for salinity control on the sample agricultural units

times the total acreage of agricultural units treated.

Data analysis will be the responsibility of the State and Area SCS

biologists. Data will be analyzed following completion of each sampling

cycle !:nd upon completion of planned salinity control actidties on the

sample sites.

38
