uU~OOJ

Chapter 4

WATER USE IN 1965 AND
PROJECTED WATER REQUIREMENTS, 1980-2020

Water is and will continue to be used consumptively for many
purposes--domestic, commercial, industrial, electric power
generation, irrigation, and livestock. The quantities of water
which will be needed to support the expected levels of production,
employment, and population in the state are presented in this
chapter. These water requirements are based on the projections
of population and economic activity discussed in Chapter 2 of
this report.

The gross water used in 1965 was 3.3 mill ion acre-feet (MAF).
Of this quantity, agriculture used 2.35 MAF while industry and
people used the remaining 0.95 MAF. By the beginning of the
21st Century, the gross water requirement for agriculture is
expected to be 10.9 MAF while the requirement for industry and
people is forecast to be 1.5 MAF. A summary of statewide gross
water requirements for agriculture, industry, and people is shown
in Table 4-1.

TABLE 4-1. The forecasts described in
Chapter 2 are the best estimates of future economic activity that are
available at the present time for the State of Kansas. These fore-
casts wil I be used for long-range water resource planning by the
Kansas Water Resources Board. As conditions change or better data
become available, the economic and water projections will be
updated.
