.

.

N
OJ.
rv
00

Department of the Interior
Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation)

Colorado River 3asin Salinity Control Program
Grand Valley Unit, Colorado - Construction of Stage One
of the Grand Valley Unit has been moving ahead satisfactorily
in 1982. Construction work began in October 1981 to con-

solidate 13 open-channel laterals presentlY serving the area
from the newly lined portion of the Government Highline

Canal, into 12 p;.pe laterals. Lateral construction ,.as about

70 percent complete at the end of August and should be

completed for the 1983 irrigation season. Stage One re-

presents only 10 percent of the Grand Valley salinity control

unit area and it is im~erative that salinity control measures

be implemented in the remaining portion of the unit as

rapidly as possible so that the Congre.ssional directives of

Public Law 93-320 can be achieved.

To test the effectiveness of Stage One, a water quality

monitoring program was initiated.

The results of this

p'rogram are being used to assess the effectiveness of Stage

One development in reducing salt loading. Hydrosalinity data

collected during the first year of monitoring in the Stage

One study area indicate that canal lining and the Department

of Agriculture's onfarm management have reduced salt loading

to the Colorado River by about 9,000 tons. By comparison,
the preconstruction estimate was 7,000 tons of salt per year

reduction from these facilities.

As a result of these

-3-

:lU ;,~i
